TWF PROTESTS AGAINST COMMERCIAL CONVERSION OF PUSHPABANTA PALACE

The Tipra Women's Federation (TWF) staged a powerful demonstration against the proposed conversion of Pushpabanta Palace into a five-star hotel, highlighting the critical importance of preserving Tripura's cultural heritage.

Protesters marched from Swami Vivekananda Ground to the Circuit House, voicing strong opposition to the state government's plans to lease the historic site to a potential private entity, reportedly the Taj Group. The rally drew significant participation from Twiprasas and heritage activists who emphasized the palace's profound cultural significance.

The demonstrators argued that Pushpabanta Palace represents far more than a mere architectural structure—it is a symbol of Tripuri ancestral pride and historical legacy. They passionately contended that the site should be preserved as a national heritage monument rather than transformed into a commercial venture.

TWF members proposed an alternative approach, suggesting that the palace could be strategically developed as a key tourism attraction under Tripura Tourism. This would not only preserve its historical integrity but also potentially generate revenue while maintaining its cultural essence.

The protest underscores growing concerns about heritage conservation in Tripura, particularly amid rapid development initiatives. Participants argued that commercializing such significant sites would deeply wound the cultural sentiments of the Twiprasas and compromise their historical narrative.

The demonstration represents a significant collective stand against what protesters perceive as the potential erasure of their cultural identity through commercial exploitation of a historically significant landmark.

The state government has not yet responded to the TWF's protest and demands.
