State Forest Minister Highlights Bamboo's Environmental and Economic Potential in Combating Climate Change at Specialized Workshop

Agartala: In a significant move towards addressing climate change concerns, the Tripura Climate Change Department organized a specialized workshop focusing on bamboo's role in environmental preservation at the Bamboo & Cane Development Institute, Lichubagan, on Saturday. The event, titled "The Role of Bamboo in Climate Change Mitigation," drew attention to the crucial role of bamboo in reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable development, with Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma leading the proceedings alongside K. Shashi Kumar, Secretary of the Science & Technology Department. Minister Debbarma emphasized the pressing challenges faced by the livestock sector due to climate change, including rising temperatures and erratic rainfall patterns, which have significantly impacted animal health and fodder availability. The workshop served as a platform for experts and researchers to discuss bamboo's multifaceted benefits, particularly its potential in carbon sequestration and soil conservation, while also exploring innovative policy measures to strengthen bamboo-based industries in Tripura. Participants delved into the environmental and economic advantages of bamboo cultivation, highlighting its potential to provide sustainable livelihoods while contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. The comprehensive discussion encompassed various aspects of bamboo utilization, from its role in environmental protection to its economic viability, with experts presenting research findings and practical applications that could benefit both the environment and local communities. The workshop's organizing team, working under the Science, Technology & Environment Department, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in raising awareness about sustainable practices and encouraging wider adoption of bamboo cultivation as a practical solution to environmental challenges, marking a significant step forward in Tripura's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development strategies.
