Agartala Press Club Elects New Leadership for 2025-2027 Term

Agartala, April 6 – The Agartala Press Club witnessed a vibrant democratic exercise on Sunday as journalists cast their votes to elect a new Managing Committee for the 2025-2027 term. The elections, held after the Annual General Meeting, saw a high voter turnout and competitive contests for key positions.

Pranab Sarkar, a seasoned journalist and social activist, secured the presidency after a closely fought three-way race against Jayanta Bhattacharjee and Arun Nath. His victory marks a shift in leadership while retaining continuity in the club’s vision.

Incumbent Secretary Ramakanta Dey successfully defended his position, defeating challenger Biswendu Bhattacharjee by a comfortable margin. Chitra Roy was elected Vice President, overcoming competition from Syed Sajjad Ali and Prabir Shil.

The Treasurer’s post went to Ranjan Roy, who fended off four other candidates, including Tapan Majumder and Jakir Hossain. Meanwhile, Abhishek Dey and Kamal Choudhury were re-elected as Assistant Secretaries.

Five members – Mihir Lal Sarkar, Abhinash Chakraborty, Ranjit Debbarma, Santosh Gope, and Biswajit Dey – were elected to the Executive Committee, ensuring diverse representation.

Advocate Sandip Datta Choudhury, the Returning Officer, oversaw the peaceful polling process. However, his decision to remove CCTV cameras before voting drew criticism from some members, raising questions about procedural transparency.

Despite minor controversies, the election concluded smoothly, with members expressing optimism about the new committee’s ability to uphold press freedom and strengthen journalist welfare initiatives in Tripura. The incoming leadership will assume office immediately for their two-year tenure.
