Agartala, June 6:
A day after the world observed Environment Day, Tripura marked a milestone in sustainable development with the inauguration of a 40-kilowatt peak (kWp) grid-connected rooftop solar power plant at Raj Bhavan, the official residence of the Governor in Agartala.
Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu inaugurated the project on Friday, making Raj Bhavan one of the first constitutional buildings in the state to function entirely on renewable energy. The ₹30 lakh initiative was executed by the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) and funded by a renewable energy firm based in Odisha.
Addressing the gathering, Governor Nallu highlighted the significance of clean energy adoption in reducing carbon footprints and promoting energy independence. “Solar energy is no longer just an alternative—it’s becoming a necessity. With the support of government schemes, its installation cost has significantly dropped, making it affordable and accessible for institutions and common citizens alike,” he said.
The Governor also underscored the importance of central government schemes like PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which offers financial subsidies for rooftop solar panels to encourage households to shift to sustainable energy while saving on power bills.
Besides its environmental benefits, the new plant is expected to reduce the operational electricity costs of Raj Bhavan significantly. Officials estimate the system will generate around 50,000 units of electricity annually, offsetting substantial greenhouse gas emissions.
Governor Nallu praised TREDA for their efforts and urged other government buildings, educational institutions, and even private establishments to adopt similar models. He further advocated for involving self-help groups (SHGs) to establish solar-powered irrigation and microgrid systems in rural areas, empowering communities and improving agricultural resilience.
This project is a step forward in India's broader target of reaching net-zero carbon emissions by 2070 and developing 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy by 2030. With this, Tripura strengthens its resolve to become a model green state in India.
