Agartala, May 22: Tripura Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) have jointly detained 21 individuals—16 Bangladeshi nationals and five Indian citizens—for violating immigration laws by crossing the India-Bangladesh border illegally.
Officials stated that nine Bangladeshi nationals, including women and children, were stopped by BSF troops near the Manu Border Outpost while trying to return home. They had been working in Agartala for the past two years without legal documentation.
Separately, a group of five Bangladeshis from Kurigram district were caught in Sepahijala's Madhupur area. Acting on a tip-off, Tripura Police captured the group near the border with help from villagers. They later confessed to attempting to travel to Delhi using the services of a human trafficker.
In another operation in South Tripura's Belonia, two Bangladeshi nationals and four Indian citizens from West Bengal were taken into custody. The Indian nationals reportedly facilitated illegal entry by crossing the border into Bangladesh and returning with the Bangladeshis.
The BSF also detained one Indian national from Tripura who illegally re-entered India from Bangladesh. Additionally, BSF seized smuggled goods, including foreign cigarettes worth ₹50 lakh, in Srinagar, South Tripura.
The 856-km international border between Tripura and Bangladesh continues to pose significant challenges in preventing unauthorised crossings and smuggling.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance policy on illegal immigration. "No infiltration from Bangladesh or Myanmar will be allowed. Anyone found entering illegally will be pushed back according to the law," he asserted. He directed the security forces to intensify surveillance across all border points.
