Tripura’s Dairy Dream: North East’s Largest Milk Plant to Open on May 17

A bold step toward self-reliance in dairy production, Tripura is set to inaugurate the largest milk processing unit in the North East—Gomati Plant II—on May 17 in Bamutia. The announcement came from Gomati Cooperative Milk Producers Union Chairman Ratan Ghosh at a press briefing in Agartala.

The plant, with a massive capacity of 40,000 litres, will revolutionise milk processing in the state. Compared to the existing 5,000-litre capacity Indranagar unit, this new facility promises enhanced efficiency and a better supply chain.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh will inaugurate the plant in the presence of CM Dr. Manik Saha, ARDD Minister Sudhangshu Das, and Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia. Ghosh credited the Centre, especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and the Tripura government for their financial and administrative support.

The state's dairy industry, which includes 5,000 farmers and 178 milk producer unions, faced setbacks during the 2024 floods. Ghosh expressed hope that the new plant would renew confidence and income for these farmers.

Other dignitaries present included Board Director Sepal Debnath and CMD Bibhas Bhattacharjee, who shared their optimism for the sector’s future. Gomati Plant II is expected to uplift the rural economy and meet the growing dairy demand.
