Agartala, August 25: In a landmark judgment, the Special Court in Dharmanagar delivered a stringent verdict today in a shocking minor rape case. The court sentenced the main accused to rigorous life imprisonment, while the victim's mother and elder sister were handed 10-year prison terms for abetting the crime.
The convicted individual, Samir Naha, was found guilty of repeatedly raping a minor girl. Government lawyer Sudarshan Sharma outlined the horrific sequence of events. The victim, along with her mother and sister, were tenants at the house of one Manik Pal in Dharmanagar's Nayapara in 2020. Samir Naha, a youth known to the family, was a frequent visitor.
According to the prosecution, Naha, often under the influence of alcohol with the elder sister, raped the minor one night. When the victim mustered the courage to report the assault to her mother and sister, they not only dismissed her plea but also threatened to kill her. This complicity allowed Naha to continue his sexual assault on multiple occasions.
Even after the family moved to a new residence on Jail Road, Naha followed and continued the abuse. The cycle of terror only ended when the minor, with assistance from Child Protection services, filed a formal complaint at the Dharmanagar Women's Police Station on April 3, 2021.
Following a thorough investigation and the deposition of 17 witnesses, Special Court Judge Anshuman Derbarma pronounced the verdict. Naha was convicted under Section 376(2) of the IPC and sentenced to life imprisonment with a fine of ₹10,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional six months of imprisonment. The victim's mother and sister were convicted for aiding the offender and suppressing the crime, receiving a 10-year prison sentence each.
