Agartala, April 20: Chief Minister Prof. Dr. Manik Saha on Saturday asserted that frequent elections disrupt development, drain resources, and create administrative hurdles. Speaking at a discussion on One Nation, One Election organised by the BJP Tripura Pradesh Legal Cell at Sukanta Academy in Agartala, he strongly advocated for the implementation of the concept to ensure smoother governance and democratic participation.
“Frequent elections throughout the year hinder development work, waste financial resources, and disrupt normal life,” said Dr. Saha. “If One Nation, One Election is implemented, voters will be able to exercise their democratic rights more effectively.”
The Chief Minister stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken the bold step of introducing the One Nation, One Election bill in Parliament to make the democratic process more citizen-friendly and development-oriented.
Drawing parallels with past reforms, Dr. Saha praised PM Modi's leadership. “PM Modi eliminated Triple Talaq despite heavy criticism and false fears of riots. Nothing happened. That’s leadership. Since independence, we’ve had two true leaders—Atal Bihari Vajpayee and now, PM Modi.”
He also mentioned the Waqf Amendment Act, 2025. “Earlier, Waqf properties were being used to illegally occupy government lands. PM Modi said this needs to be amended, and now it’s done.”
Referring to criminal justice reforms, he added that under new laws, citizens can now file FIRs at any police station, a step towards empowering the common people.
“One Nation, One Election is practiced in several countries. Why not in India?” he questioned. “By 2047, Vikshit Bharat means a nation free from corruption and outdated practices. The Opposition’s criticism is baseless and purely for political survival.”
Highlighting the strain elections put on resources, he said, “Elections pull manpower from essential sectors like education. Implementing One Nation, One Election will save time and money, and enable continuous development.”
BJP State President and Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharya, Chief Whip Kalyani Roy, BJP Vice President Subal Bhowmik, and Social Worker Dr. Ashok Sinha were also present at the event.
