Agartala, May 1, 2025: On the occasion of International Workers’ Day, the All India Central Council of Trade Unions (AICCTU), Tripura State Council, organised a State Workers' Convention at the Agartala Press Club, focusing on resisting fascist and imperialist aggression and defending the Constitution and democracy.
The convention began by paying homage to the martyrs of the historic May Day of 1886, who laid down their lives demanding 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest, and 8 hours of recreation. Speakers stressed that in the present era of labour exploitation, low wages, unemployment, and inequality under the guise of new Labour Codes and long working hours, the relevance of May Day has grown stronger.
State Secretary of AICCTU, Comrade Swapan Banik, and CPI(ML) State Secretary Partha Karmakar, among others, addressed the gathering. They criticised the Modi government's policies, including the new National Agricultural Marketing Policy seen as an attempt to revive the repealed farm laws, the Waqf Act 2025, the aggressive privatisation of national assets, the NEP 2020, and the weakening of the public healthcare system. These policies, they alleged, have intensified exploitation, contractual hiring, and outsourcing, while robbing workers of their rights.
The convention strongly condemned the Modi government's silence and surrender to imperialist pressures, especially after the US tariff aggression affecting India’s agriculture, textile, jewellery, and pharmaceutical sectors.
To oppose these "anti-people and anti-national" policies, the AICCTU announced a nationwide general strike on May 20, calling upon workers, farmers, employees, students, women, and youth to participate. A campaign involving posters, street meetings, rallies, and group discussions in villages was announced.
A unanimous resolution was passed demanding that May 1 be once again declared a public holiday in honour of workers’ contributions to civilisation.
