Mock exercise held across all eight districts; public urged not to panic
Agartala, May 7: In a coordinated effort to assess and enhance emergency preparedness, a large-scale civil defence mock drill was conducted across all eight districts of Tripura at 3:30 PM on Tuesday. The initiative was part of a nationwide emergency preparedness exercise aimed at testing the effectiveness of disaster response systems in the event of natural disasters, enemy attacks, and other crises.
In the capital city of Agartala, the mock drill took place at Umakanta School, under the supervision of the District Administration of West Tripura, in collaboration with various state-level emergency response units.
The exercise was led by the Disaster Management Authority and the Civil Defence Corps, with active participation from the Tripura State Rifles (TSR), Home Guards, NCC cadets, Apada Mitra volunteers, medical teams, and Tripura Fire & Emergency Services. Police personnel, administrative officials, and observers were also present to monitor the drill.
To simulate a real emergency scenario, sirens were sounded near the Chief Minister’s residence and other key areas at designated intervals. The sirens, scheduled at 4:00 PM and 5:30 PM, were meant to alert responders to different phases of the operation, including evacuation, medical rescue, and restoration of essential services.
As part of the drill, electricity services in Agartala were temporarily suspended from 5:30 PM to 5:40 PM, following administrative instructions. Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) had earlier issued a public notice informing citizens about this 10-minute power disruption.
West Tripura District Magistrate Dr. Vishal Kumar, speaking to the media, confirmed that the mock drill was executed successfully at Umakanta School. “Such drills help identify gaps in our preparedness and improve coordination among various response agencies. Public participation and cooperation are vital,” he said.He also reassured citizens not to panic during the exercise. “This is a routine part of building a disaster-resilient Tripura. The mock drill is being monitored at the highest levels, and feedback will be used to strengthen future responses,” Dr. Kumar added.
The primary objective of the state-wide drill was to test the functionality of alert systems, evacuation routes, emergency rescue protocols, communication networks, and the restoration of vital services such as electricity, water, and medical response.
Authorities emphasised that such proactive measures are crucial given Tripura’s vulnerability to earthquakes, floods, and other emergencies. The mock drills serve as preparedness assessments to ensure minimal damage and swift recovery during real-time disasters.
The event witnessed positive engagement from participating agencies, and preliminary feedback indicates that response timings and coordination have significantly improved compared to previous drills.
Officials confirmed that a detailed assessment report would be prepared and submitted to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). Based on this, recommendations will be made for further strengthening Tripura’s emergency readiness framework.Citizens across the state were cooperative and responsive during the exercise, reflecting increased awareness of disaster preparedness.
