Demand for 'Greater Tipraland' Recognition

In a significant development, Tipra Motha, the primary opposition party in Tripura, organized a 12-hour dawn-to-dusk bandh on September 30 in tribal areas, specifically within the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). The objective of this bandh was to emphasize the need for a constitutional solution to address the longstanding issues faced by the indigenous population of the state.

The bandh, which commenced peacefully in the early hours, was aimed at drawing attention to the demands of the indigenous people and highlighting their grievances.

Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma, the leader of Tipra Motha, called on party leaders and supporters to observe the bandh in a peaceful manner and ensure its success. He stressed the importance of conveying a strong message to Delhi through this protest.

Debbarma expressed frustration over decades of perceived injustice faced by the indigenous population, citing the deprivation of rights to land, political representation, and economic opportunities. He emphasized that the time had come for these rights to be recognized and addressed.

Debbarma criticized the Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) for opposing the bandh organized by Tipra Motha. He clarified that the bandh should not be seen as a mere political maneuver but rather as a united effort by the Tiprasa people to voice their concerns and demand their rights.

Furthermore, he called attention to the historical record of the CPI(M) in the state, accusing the party of neglecting the development of the Tiprasa people during its 25-year rule in Tripura. He highlighted the apparent contradiction of the CPI(M) opposing the bandh despite having portrayed former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar as the "poorest chief minister."

In summary, the 12-hour bandh organized by Tipra Motha in Tripura's tribal areas underscores the indigenous population's demand for greater recognition of their rights and a constitutional solution to address their longstanding issues. The peaceful nature of the protest and its significance in the political context of Tripura is notable.
