Agartala, April 28, 2025:
Tension gripped the Belonia Ballamukha area today as Tipra Motha workers and supporters staged protests against the alleged illegal construction of a dam by Bangladesh authorities near the international border. The demonstrators accused Bangladesh of violating the International Boundary Delimitation Act by erecting the structure close to Indian territory.
The situation escalated at Bankar Uttar Para, where a large number of Tipra Motha supporters gathered, chanting slogans and demanding immediate action. The local police and Border Security Force (BSF) personnel swiftly arrived to contain the unrest. However, when protesters attempted to march towards the Ballamukha border, clashes erupted between the agitators and security personnel, heightening tensions in the area.
Tipra Motha has intensified its demands, calling for the resignation of Yunus, the head of Bangladesh’s caretaker government, holding him responsible for the border dispute. Former Tipra Motha chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarma took to social media, criticising the BSF for allegedly preventing thousands of Tipra Motha workers in Belonia from reaching the dam site to halt the construction.
In a strongly worded message, Debbarma warned that Tiprasa youth were prepared to take decisive action if allowed, indicating rising anger among the indigenous community over the developments at the border. He also called upon the authorities to take serious diplomatic steps to ensure the protection of Indian territory.
Security measures remain heightened in Belonia and surrounding areas, with heavy police and BSF deployment to maintain law and order. Senior officials are monitoring the situation closely, and no official statement from the state government or central agencies had been issued till the time of reporting.
This incident has once again drawn attention to the fragile nature of border management in Tripura and the increasing assertiveness of regional political groups like Tipra Motha in protecting indigenous interests.
