Agartala, July 22: “The Legislative Assembly is a sacred temple of democracy where laws are framed for the welfare of the people,” said Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha while inaugurating the event “Historic July: Footsteps of Tripura Legislative Assembly” at the Assembly lobby. Reflecting on the significance of July, he highlighted that the Tripura Assembly was formed on 1st July 1963 and shifted from Ujjayanta Palace to the new complex on 22nd July 2011. Speaker Biswabandhu Sen noted that legislators are chosen by the blessings of the people and God, while Minister Ratan Lal Nath recalled the state's first Assembly with just 30 MLAs.
Forest Minister Animesh Debbarma and Opposition Leader Jitendra Chaudhury also stressed the Assembly’s democratic legacy. Marking the occasion, dignitaries including the CM, Speaker, and MLAs planted mango saplings in the Assembly premises, supported by the Forest Department which distributed 250 saplings. Addressing the media, CM Saha emphasised that survival of civilisation is impossible without nature and urged people to resist deforestation collectively. He cited PM Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, under which 1.42 lakh saplings have already been planted. “A mature tree absorbs 48 pounds of CO₂ and provides 260 pounds of oxygen annually,” he added, urging citizens to treat tree plantation as a solemn duty.
