BIG BREAKING: IndiGo Flight Carrying Assam CM Diverted to Agartala Amid Rising Aviation Concerns

Agartala, 23rd August 2025: Air safety concerns are once again in the spotlight after an IndiGo flight from Dibrugarh to Guwahati, carrying Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, was forced to divert to Agartala on Sunday due to adverse weather conditions, the Chief Minister’s Office confirmed. The unexpected diversion has raised eyebrows, coming barely a week after a similar incident involving another flight on the same route. On that occasion, a Guwahati–Dibrugarh flight reportedly ‘misapproached’ the runway at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International (LGBI) Airport, leading to panic among passengers before it landed safely on its second attempt. Assam cabinet minister Bimal Borah, who was onboard, described the first landing attempt as “very rough” and admitted that many passengers feared the worst. “The rear wheels had touched down with a jolt before the pilot quickly pulled the aircraft back into the air. We were clueless and extremely anxious until the pilot informed us of a ‘misapproach’,” Borah had stated earlier. Today’s incident involving the Chief Minister has once again triggered widespread concern about the rising frequency of flight diversions and near-miss situations in the North-East aviation sector. With senior leaders and hundreds of passengers exposed to recurring risks, experts are calling for a thorough review of safety protocols, weather preparedness, and runway management at major airports in the region. Officials assured that all passengers, including the Chief Minister, are safe and that the diversion was purely precautionary due to unfavourable weather. However, opposition parties and aviation experts are likely to demand accountability and stronger safety measures in light of these back-to-back incidents. The spotlight is now firmly on the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to examine whether lapses in air traffic coordination or infrastructure limitations may have contributed to these unsettling developments.
